People want to know the answers to the big question , “What room should I start in first?” When it comes to decorating styles it’s a big question with a lot of answers so I thought I’d capture as much as I can in a summary that would be easy to the beginner home decorator.
See our site for more on home decorating tips .
what you are about to read will be for the homeowner and apartment renter as well. The principles are solid and will work if you live in an apartment or a home.
Because you feel completely unsure of what to do with the task at hand, I would offer this bit of advice… don’t try to do all the rooms at the same time. Even if you have a brand new house and you’re starting from scratch, this can still apply. You will have all rooms to consider, this I understand, but you can each room at a time.
We will begin by talking about what I like to call the seven principle layers to a great look:
- Layer 1: Space of the room - Walls, floors, ceilings, windows, fireplaces, focal point.
- Layer 2: Flooring - carpet and tile , hardwood, linoleum.
- Layer 3: Covered or uncovered furniture - sofa, chairs, recliners, and ottomans.
- Layer 4: Case-goods - cocktail table, end tables, console tables.
- Layer 5: Lighting- general, task, accent.
- Layer 6: Window decor - hard treatments like blinds or shutters/ soft like curtains and drapery.
- Layer 7: Accessories - area rugs, oriental rugs, artwork, sculptures, accent plants, decorative pillows, blankets and throws, candles, pictures, posters, etc.
By giving you bite size pieces I’ve just given you a substantial game plan that you can use as a starting point .
First, you must decide on your your preference in design and color scheme and color combinations you will utilize in throughout your project . Remember, start the room that excites you the most.
Let’s start with giving you the fundamentals of colors in design.
Have you heard that color can, make you feel sad ? Color affects your emotions and can turn your decorating project into a success .
Here are some tips to ponder on :
- To make a room look larger - use light, cool colors.
- To make a room cozier and inviting, use warm colors.
- To make a ceiling look higher, use white or light colors.
- To drop the ceiling and make lower, use darker colors.
Seasoned professional will tell you the best all-time rule to follow is this:
Areas of prime importance– floors, walls, and ceilings, should receive neutralized colors in a range of values. Make the floor the darkest surface, the walls medium, and the ceiling the lightest value. Now on to Personal Style. What do you really like in your apartment or home? Do you know? Is it traditional or contemporary ? If you’re not sure, simply visit a few furniture showcases. Furniture stores always display their furniture in groups called “vignettes”.
These vignettes will display sections from living rooms to kitchens . As you visit these displays ask yourself, “What makes this so attractive to me?”
In selecting your interior style , your your choice in style is a mirror of your reflections . I always say it’s a representation of what you like , your life’s reflection , your preferred environment your present and past , and thus reflects the real you .
